County settles suit over seized transcript

Article Abstract:

Duluth, MN's News-Tribune settled a case against Itasca County in which the newspaper had charged invasion of privacy for seizing documents which had been given to a hearing-impaired reporter to aid him in reporting a story accurately. The Privacy Protection Act of 1980 was cited as prohibiting such behavior in law enforcement unless all efforts for a subpoena have been tried first. Itasca County said it would return the document and pay legal fees.

Law keeping childrens' names secret unconstitutional

Article Abstract:

The Washington Supreme Court in Allied Daily Newspapers v. Eikenberry struck down as unconstitutional a state law requiring court records on child molestation victims be kept secret. The law was held to violate the guarantee of open court proceedings in the state Constitution. The law had been passed in response to a newspaper's policy of naming all witnesses who gave testimony in felony trials.
