Article Abstract:

Issues related to the role of investigative reporting in a high-technology world and global corporate culture are examined, focusing on comments by such journalists as Ted Koppel, Mike Wallace, and Diane Sawyer at a panel held at the Investigative Reporters and Editors national conference. Topics include the impact small online organizations may have on journalism, the need for investigative reporters to have enough financial backing to fight lawsuits, and the symbiotic relationship between large organizations like ABC News and smaller investigative organizations, which may originate a story ABC News continues to cover.

Hewitt responds to movie portrayal: war of words ensues with ex-CBS producer

Issues related to the controversial portrayal of Don Hewitt, executive producer of the CBS investigative reporting television show "60 Minutes," in the movie "The Insider" are examined, focusing on the role played by former "60 Minutes" producer Lowell Bergman in the making of the movie. The IRE Annual Conference would highlight investigative journalism and showcase panels on investigating civil rights, bringing an investigative culture to the newsroom and deeper coverage of infectious diseases. It would include reports by the executive director and IRE Board treasurer, updates from various board members and new business brought up by members.
