Privacy: panel addresses growing debate over protected information

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the panel discussion "New Media Ethics and Privacy" from the 2000 National Computer-Assisted Reporting Conference. Topics include the disparity in gains between consumers and marketers from the sharing of private information, extrapolation of laws beyond their original intent, and access issues for professionals other than journalists, such as historians and researchers.

Kansas drivers: fight for accident records pays off in multiple stories

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the acquisition of a decade's worth of information from the Kansas Dept of Transportation, requested by The Wichita Eagle newspaper. Topics include cost issues, coping with the size of the data, and the patterns revealed by the data, such as 20 drivers with several serious accidents, which raised questions of why they were still allowed to drive.
