Reporters in California, Texas found in contempt

Article Abstract:

Two broadcast journalists in California and one in Texas were found in contempt of court in two separate cases for refusing to reveal sources, though none had been sanctioned as of late Apr 1996. A CA Superior Court judge ordered a KNTV News reporter and news director to jail for refusing to disclose their confidential source regarding a suspect's murder confession. In Apr 1996 a KTRK News reporter in Houston exhausted his state appeals and was rejected by the US Supreme Court regarding a source in a libel case.

Appeals court deadlock protects reporters

Article Abstract:

The US Court of Appeals for the 3d Circuit could not come to a decision in a case regarding the right of journalists to withhold confidential information from a grand jury. Four Pennsylvania news organizations had been subpoenaed to turn over information obtained from a federal racketeering trial, but they moved to quash the subpoenas, arguing that compliance would violate their First Amendment rights. The 6-6 split of the 3d Circuit allowed the motion to quash to stand.

New shield law won't help reporters' contempt cases

Article Abstract:

The North Carolina Supreme Court in In re Owens affirmed a contempt order against a reporter for declining to testify about conversations with a source and ruled that review of the contempt order against another reporter who refused to hand over notes from a prison interview had been improperly granted. The ruling meant a July 1999 state shield law recognizing a qualified privilege for journalists would not apply.
