'Sinnekins' and the vice: prolegomena

Article Abstract:

The Sinnekens, the allegorical drama actors of the late medieval and early Renaissance Dutch drama, and the Vice of the English interludes were the embodiments of evil on the stage in accordance with the contemporary European Christian belief that moral values can be inculcated in the people through such personifications. The Vice was a solitary figure and had many soliloquies whereas the Sinneken did not have soliloquies. Both served a similar moral purpose probably due to the similarities between the Dutch and English cultures.

'The Middle Cornish Interlude:' genre and tradition

Article Abstract:

Most Cornish interludes were presented after 1500 but there is evidence of one interlude's performance in medieval times. The text contains 36 lines of Middle Cornish verse and was discovered in 1877 by Henry Jenner on the verso of a manuscript in the British Museum. Since it is located among the charters, it has traditionally had various titles whose first word was 'charter' but the title 'The Middle Cornish Interlude' is a more accurate identification of the work.
