Staging a staged crisis in masculinity: race and masculinity in 'Six Degrees of Separation'

Article Abstract:

John Guare's play 'Six Degrees of Separation' demonstrates the hypocrisy that often underlies assumptions about American social mobility. The African American con man who attempts to infiltrate an upper-class New York City family is shown to be excluded from the promise of a better life.

William 1906 play 'The Great Divide' portrays a woman who first physically frees herself from captivity in the American West, then psychologically and morally from her rape. The independence symbolized by the West is seen here as preferable to oppressive New England Puritanism.

William Saroyan's plays portrayed the American West as a multicultural landscape whose inhabitants attempt to reconcile their desire for paradise with a harsh environment. His West was a mental territory where the search for freedom was limited by the sins of the past.
