State court orders school to release response to probe

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court of Kentucky has ruled that a report submitted to the National Collegiate Athletic Assn (NCAA) by a university is a public record. In University of Kentucky v Courier-Journal, the court stated that the university was a public agency under Kentucky law and could not withhold the report made in response to the NCAA's investigation. The court also stated that the report did not meet any of the privacy exemptions under the state's Open Records Act.

Conviction for theft of information affirmed

Article Abstract:

The US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit has upheld the theft conviction of two executives of a defense contracting company for obtaining government information about contract bids. Several media organizations and the ACLU filed amici curiae, concerned that the conviction would endanger journalists who revealed information the government did not want known, but the court did not rule on the constitutional issues.
