The politics of silence: "Mansfield Park" and the amelioration of slavery

Article Abstract:

The concept of the amelioration of slavery as highlighted in Jane Austen's "Mansfield Park" and the cultural moment of the silence in a scene are discussed. "Mansfield Park" demonstrates that silence did not mean complicity and speech did not indicate resistance to the empire in the context of the slave trade.

"It lak'th but life": Redford's 'Wit and Science,' Anne of Cleves, and the politics of interpetation

The author examines how portraits played political and theatrical roles in early Renaissance England. The parallel between how Henry VIII treated Anne of Cleves, having first seen her portrait by Hans Holbein, and how playwright John Redford portrayed courtship in 'The Boke Named the Gouernor' is analyzed.
