Verne's cartographies

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented of the literary and narrative functions of the maps and other design elements present in the illustrated Hetzel editions of Jules Verne's 'Voyages Extraordinaires' that are described as an admirable reflection on the relations of the alphabetic text to its graphic counterparts. The play of word and image in the texts are complex and original and they represent a major achievement of Verne and his publishers.
