Wasted value: the serial logic of H.G. Wells's "Tono-Bungay"

Issues related to the critique of a consumerist culture offered by H.G. Wells's novel "Tono-Bungay" are examined, focusing on the manner in which merchants may create value in an object that may not have intrinsic value. Topics include the economic criticicism of Alfred Marshall and Karl Marx, traditional definitions of waste and value, Henry James's opinion of Wells, and the literary relationship between Wells and James Joyce.

Hardy's transatlantic Wessex: Constructing the local in 'The Mayor of Casterbridge'

Article Abstract:

Thomas Hardy's Wessex novels were situated in a fictitious place synonymous with local, rustic Englishness, but they were capable of extending the Atlantic paradigm and the concept of the Atlantic text. The manner in which Wessex novels particularly 'The Mayor of Casterbridge', while rejecting internationalism for the English countryside, nevertheless shows a vital connection to the transatlantic world is discussed.
