Western European broadcasting, deregulation, and public television: the Portuguese experience

Article Abstract:

The Portuguese government has established a committee to address issues concerning the country's television broadcasting industry, including public television financing, the economic feasibility of regional television and the future of television. Public television should not be so highly dependent on advertising and a contract should be formed between public service broadcaster RTP and the government to ensure payment for expensive fictional program productions. The regulatory system should be restructured and the Television Law of 1990 should be reformed to allow for television regulation.

William G. Bleyer and the relevance of journalism education

Article Abstract:

American educator William G. Bleyer felt responsible for the deterioration of news media, especially in newspapers and periodicals in the 19th century. His family's involvement in the newspaper business gave him more than enough impetus to campaign for the improvement of journalism and consequently mass communication. The successful establishment of the University of Wisconsin's School of Journalism is testimony to Bleyer's advocacy of expanded interaction between schools and journalists.
