Workplace safety

Article Abstract:

A brief description on workplace injuries and fatalities with the help of data presented by Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation program, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and other centers is presented. Among other findings, one of them show that one construction worker dies every week in a trench collapse, most of which could be avoided by proper prevention.

Mine safety: oversight board lets violators slide

Article Abstract:

A Courier-Journal series published that the did not exert much authority and discipline, even in cases where coal miners were seriously injured or killed because of unsafe and sometimes illegal practices underground. The mining board granted the newspaper's request under the state open records law to review case files and board minutes dating back to 1990.

Heavy trucks: Database shows staggering safety violations contributing to crashes and highway fatalities

Article Abstract:

The safety records of Northwest Indiana's 26 flagged companies and the preparedness of the state police in looking for, and catching, heavy-truck violations on the roads are examined. Out of 2,864 inspections, trucks were pulled out of service 1,024 times for safety violations, an out-of-service rate considerably higher than the national average.
