Art for art's sake

Article Abstract:

Total viewing of arts programming on terrestrial television channels in the UK fell nearly one-third from 1998 to 2001, according to research firm David Graham & Associates. Public service channels BBC1, ITV1 and Channel 4 cut their hours of arts programming nearly in half in 1998 to 2002, while BBC2 remained about the same with a total of 80 hours in 2002. There are signs of a revival, however. Channel Five has doubled its arts programming hours; BBC1 plans to spend 50 million pounds sterling on arts television in 2002-2003, up 31.5% from a year earlier, and Channel 4 has commissioned some new works.
