City magazines have diverse roles

Article Abstract:

A study of 74 city magazines was made to examine the lengths that magazines go to help their communities identify, define and deal with problems and how their approach and content have changed since 1979. The functions and views of editors, as well as the overall approach of urban magazines, have not changed much since 1979. While these magazines are most similar in form of ownership, circulation frequency, sources of revenue and total approach to content, they differ in circulation, revenues obtained and the size of communities they serve.

Dead end at Oklahoma City

Article Abstract:

Coverage of Middle East terrorism by American journalists is described as superficial, lazy with the inclination to stereotype. Most Israeli and Arab journalists believe that American journalists distinguish the good from the bad in the Middle East based on appearance. Americans also portray all bombings as the work of terrorists, as they did during the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing before Timothy McVeigh was captured.

What is an Olympic city? Visions of Sydney 2000

Article Abstract:

The host city for the Olympic Games serves a dual role in representing its nation and in identifying itself as a world city, but the changes to infrastructure that are often needed to properly host such mega-events result in significant changes to urban spaces. The changes being undertaken in Sydney, Australia, for the Olympic Games in the year 2000 show precisely that such geographic concerns are crucial.
