Constructing the Kurds in the Turkish press: A case study of Hurriyet newspaper

Article Abstract:

The coverage by Turkey's biggest daily, Hurriyet is seen as representative of the main ideology and the discursive struggles of Turkey's elite to articulate the Kurdish identity. Kurds generally were covered by newspaper because of the pressure from foreign countries, the EU and the US by bringing up the subject of cultural rights, the possible establishment of a Kurdish state in northern Iraq, and EU countries' dealings with illegal Kurdish immigrants.

Popular song and social change in Kenya

Article Abstract:

There is a correlation between Kenyan popular culture and the developmental stages of socio-economic institutions in Kenya. Popular Kenyan songs reflect the experiences of the singers. Kenya has a history of 'horizontalization' of the influx of information and opinion; thus, the message in the songs spread rapidly. The songs of Joseph Kamaru have generated pressure for democratization, which culminated in the first multiparty election in 1992.
