Debating digital TV at Montreux

Article Abstract:

It is likely that digital terrestrial television as it is currently envisaged will not be able to compete effectively with satellite and cable channels. Against this background, it would perhaps be wiser to consider auctioning future rights to use parts of the broadcast band spectrum while existing analogue television services are still in operation. Existing broadcasters should be given prior rights to control their own spectrum free of charge. It would then be possible to licence a new entity to supply all UK households with free digital reception equipment.

Channel 5 earns 22m pounds sterling cash break

Article Abstract:

The Independent Television Commission has confirmed that the start date for Channel 5 has been postponed, and will now be mid-March 1997. This means that Channel 5 will have almost a year to make its first annual payment of 22,002,000 pounds sterling to the UK govenrment. This will allow it to save more than 100,000 pounds sterling a month in interest for Pearson, which has a 24% stake, United News and Media, with 29%, CLT, with 29%, and EM Warburg Pincus, with 18%.
