Divided people, divided press: interpreting the poisonous silences in a fractured society

Article Abstract:

Journalism in Ireland reflects the division of country. Journalists are divided into two groups, namely, those that are in Northern Ireland and those that report to outside news organizations. They work under different rules and agendas depending on the audience they serve. The terms used by journalists in reference to the country such as 'Ulster' or 'Northern Ireland' are also believed to indicate the side they take in the conflict.

Murray Kempton - a perspective for the ages

Article Abstract:

Journalist Murray Kempton is remembered for his adherence to the principle of fairness. He is known for using a strict personal code of ethics in measuring the facts and people he met. Despite his strong criticism of public figures, he made it a point never to lash out at them when they were down. Kempton also practiced the philosophy of never getting close to a public figure since this undermines objectivity.

Covering Gaza and the West Bank

Article Abstract:

Reports on Gaza and the West Bank by the American press focus on events such as Israeli confiscation, murder of Palestinian suspects, and tortures perpetrated by Palestinian and Israeli police. However, these reports fail to acknowledge the reasons behind these events, and instead create the impression that main obstacles to peace are extremism, terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism.
