Doing it for themselves

Article Abstract:

Freelance workers in the UK broadcasting industry face worsening conditions of employment, and, in Aug 1997, they launched the Programme Makers' Organisation to represent their interests. Freelance workers account for approximately 60% of the industry's workforce, and dissatisfaction exists in most sectors. Some particular issues include absence of intellectual property rights for directors, payment according to camera running hours rather than hours worked for production teams, and exploitation of eager young freelance workers by cable television stations.
