Freeing Granada's community spirit

Article Abstract:

Granada Television's gift of 100,000 pounds sterling to launch five community projects in some of north west England's most deprived areas has encouraged local investment totalling six million pounds sterling. The scheme is the idea of TV chief executive Charles Allen, who approached five national companies, including British Aerospace Airbus, and persuaded them each to donate the time of a chief executive for five hours a week. Among the projects is the development of a new youth and sports centre in Chester and a community centre in Warrington.

Premature elation

Article Abstract:

A High Court hearing has begun into the award of the Channel 5 licence to Channel 5 Broadcasting (C5B), a consortium made up of MAI, Pearson, EM Warburg Pincus and CLT. Failed Channel 5 bidders Virgin TV and New Century Television, backed by Rupert Murdoch, had initially been cooperating to oppose the award of the licence to C5B, but they are now experiencing a bitter split. Their legal representatives are clashing with each other at the hearing, giving a publicity opportunity to C5B.
