Fuzzy signals

Article Abstract:

Digital audio broadcasting (DAB) promises sound quality equivalent to that on CDs. However, critics are concerned about the cost and limited potential profits with this new technology. Commercial Radio Companies Association (CRCA) argues that it will cost the independent sector an extra 35 million pounds sterling each year to use digital broadcasting with no guarantee of attracting extra listeners. These concerns caused Emap Radio to withdraw from the bid for the first DAB multiplex. However, DAB has to be the way forward because analogue radio will eventually be closed down.

The quiz answers

Article Abstract:

A fall of up to 800,000 radio listeners in July 1998 has resulted in a change of programming schedule at UK BBC Radio 4. Two quiz programmes have been dropped from the schedule with the reinstatement of news programmes. There is a big question hanging over the lunchtime after-news slot which listeners feel is not working for them. The controller of Radio 4 James Boyle believes the station should look to the long-term, which would account for the need to discard newly developed programmes which fail to attract high enough ratings.

Tuning into the beautiful game

Article Abstract:

UK radio stations are competing for the rights to cover live Premiership football games in a bid to increase listener numbers. Commercial stations are willing to spend thousands of pounds sterling on football rights because the majority of listeners will be young males, which will bring in increased revenues from advertisers. Emap Radio plans to invest 100,000 pounds sterling on Premiership football right in 1998. Radio 5 Live can attract an audience of up to 1,100,000 listeners by covering an important Premiership game.
