Gibson turns to Life of Grime for BBC 1

Article Abstract:

BBC 1 is set to air two new docu-soaps, which will be produced by BBC head of features, Jeremy Gibson, in 1999One of the films, which has a working title A Life of Grime, is a 6x30-minute series that will focus on investigations conducted by London, UK-based environmental health officers involving noise offenses and premises that include restaurants, fast-food outlets and shops. The other film, entitled Au Pairs, is also a 6x30-minute series that tells about the experiences and motives of the young girls who agree to look after the children of the families who employed them.

MBC signs Cruise star

Article Abstract:

Mentorn Barraclough Carey (MBC) has commissioned singer Jane McDonald, the famous actress in the successful docu-soap program titled The Cruise at BBC 1, in an exclusive development contract. The contract includes a variety of primetime programs targeting terrestrial channels and the International market where McDonald is part of the major cast. MBC showbusiness editor Nicholas Lazarus said positive results from negotiations with UK broadcasters have been obtained and more specific projects will be discussed in a month or two.

Union asks Smith to block spin-off of BBC Resources

Article Abstract:

BBC's plan to spin off BBC Resources has been opposed by broadcasting union Bectu, which is asking Media Secretary Chris Smith to block the move. Smith has yet to give its go signal to BBC to drop BBC Resources as its wholly-owned commercial subsidiary while BBC is planning to wants to start the spinoff process on July 1, 1998. Gerry Morrissey, a supervisory official of Bectu, told Smith that the vote cast by union members in favor of a strike over the issue shows that BBC staff are anxious about the consequences of the move.
