High-brows raised in arts TV; are serious arts programmes in danger of being squeezed out by a more populist, 'docu-soap' approach to the genre?

Article Abstract:

British television broadcasters are struggling to balance the mandate to provide arts programming with the struggle for ratings. The BBC's Kim Evans hopes to fulfill both demands with the series "Renaissance," which will be promoted as a serious arts documentary series but which will aim for an audience of about 1.2 million. Channel 4 says its 1998 series "Jazz Heroes" attracted on 400,000 viewers, but that it retains a commitment to that audience. ITV's Grant Mansfield says that arts programs should not shun the populist docu-soap genre.
