In search of a strong European public sphere: Some critical observations on conceptualizations of publicness and the (European) public sphere

Article Abstract:

The most basic features of the media-centered operationalization of European public sphere are explained through Kant's 'transcendental principle of publicity.' It is shown that the idea of a personal public use of reason or right to communicate is an idea of terminating the divide, which indeed would enable citizens to become equal in access to public communication and thus help to create a cosmopolitan public sphere.

The value of entertainment for multicultural society: a comparative approach towards 'white' and 'black' soap opera talk

Western European countries are known as multicultural society. Soap operas offer viewers the opportunity to put the actions and interactions of human beings into social and cultural perspective. A talk on how people construct themselves and others in relation to the soaps they regularly watch on television is presented.

National, transnational or supranational cinema? Rethinking European film studies

Article Abstract:

Critical parameters and historical perceptions that dominated the academic study of European cinema, since the 1990's are discussed. It is argued that the supranational dimension of the term 'European' is ignored and suggestions like engaging in areas that interconnect national cinemas are put forward.
