Inherent dependence on power: the Hong Kong press in political transition

Article Abstract:

Journalists in Hong Kong are worried about criticizing China. There is talk of the invisible hand behind self-censorship of newspapers and television stations and it continues to grow. There is evidence that China has exerted heavy pressure on the press, overtly by explicit instructions for the press not to advocate independence of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tibet, no advocacy for subverting Chinese Communist rule and no personal attacks on Chinese leaders.
