Laughton poaches Horrell to boost UBE's digital plans

Article Abstract:

United Broadcasting & Entertainment has hired Charlie Horrell to assume the title director of special projects and develop the company's digital plans. He will initially work on detailed plans for the digital channels United Broadcasting is developing. The company will venture into providing programming to ITV2, a digital terrestrial television (DTT) service, as well as commercial DTT multiplex operator SDN. United Broadcasting CEO Roger Laughton said that Horrell brings operational experience of a multi-channel environment, which the company does not have at present.

DVD's own digital divide

Article Abstract:

The incompatibility in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray standards is about to disappear. A consortium formed from companies promoting the two different formats of the high definition technology is negotiating to bring in some sort of uniformity. The participants include Sony Corp., Dell, Apple and Matsushita (Panasonic) from Blu-Ray group and Toshiba, Intel, Warner Bros, and NEC from HD-DVD group.

BBC digital channels BBC3 and BBC4 are faced with several issues, such as veteran journalists endorsing the division of news and current affairs into two separate entities deserving more than two channels. A viewpoint essay on the state of news and current affairs in the television industry is presented.
