Marking time

Article Abstract:

The Independent Television Commission's (ITC) review of the performance of ITV franchises in 1994 highlights lack of innovation in scheduling and commissioning as a continuing problem. Daytime programmes focus too heavily on chat shows, acquired drama serials and repeats, while factual programmes rely too much on the royal family and the work of the emergency services. The report argues that the ITV network would benefit from relying on programme formats which are known to be popular in order to finance innovations.

Channel 4 stakes all on young blood

Article Abstract:

UK commercial television broadcaster Channel 4 plans to launch a new TV soap drama aimed at teenagers. The new series, Hollyoaks, produced by Phil Redmond's Mersey Television, is being filmed on the location of Channel 4's Brookside flagship soap, also produced by Mersey Television. The new soap was commissioned by Lucinda Whiteley, commissioning editor for children's programmes. The aim is to attract the young teenage audience aged between 13 and 16 that is mostly ignored by BBC TV and ITV.

ITC censures ITV for 'lack of innovation'

Article Abstract:

ITV's programme scheduling and commissioning lacked innovation in 1994, according to a review by the Independent Television Commission. The range and scheduling of religious programmes throughout the ITV network has also been criticised. Daytime programmes were criticised for depending on studio audience talk shows, peak time original serial repeats and acquired drama serials.
