New media, old messages

Article Abstract:

The number of Internet users in the Congress is on the increase, but most Congressmen are not using it to their advantage. Most Congressmen use the Net only for a one-way interaction with the voters, showing little interest in feedback. The positive interaction available on the Net is ignored by many Congressmen mainly due to its newness on the political scene. Those who are wired to the Net make little effort to update their Web sites. Recently, the Republicans showed their ability to handle such technology when the situation called for it.

Unexpected consequences - new media and Congress

Article Abstract:

US House Speaker Newt Gingrich's effort to put the Congress on the Internet unwittingly serves the purposes of lobbyists and the President. The service is aimed at local constituencies to provide them with better access to the activities of lawmakers and to reduce the influence of lobbyists. The evidence, however, shows that previous attempts to introduce new technology in the Congress have met with unexpected consequences. This proves that the beneficiaries of the technological revolution are always unanticipated.
