New roles for new times?

Article Abstract:

The traditional role of media is threatened by the growth of new technology even though media has largely fulfilled its commitments to protect democracy and peoples' right to information. Technological changes in the media have led to the growth of individualism and privatization of media use. Commercialisation has led to erosion of media values resulting in its detachment from their local and national roots. The media is tending to fragment instead of serving as integrating force. Society should make conscious efforts to strengthen media.

Roma in the Hungarian media: in unstable times, images with dangerous consequences appear

Article Abstract:

Images linked with Gypsiness appear in the Hungarian media at times of instability. These images have dangerous repercussions for the Roma, debasing their citizenship and possibly prompting physical violence against them. The Hungarian media's portrayal of Gypsy criminality stems from both contemporary reporting and old cultural and political structures. The Gypsy question, which is the key unresolved issue in Hungarian society, is not being treated with suitable weight and sense of context by the Hungarian media.

The best of times

Article Abstract:

The New York Times in 1968 had no competition, was a less gentler place to work and its reporters were not as educated as the publication's reporters are in 1998. Thus, this meant that both internal competition and external arrogance were dangerously high. However, for someone who was young and a reporter, working for the paper at that time was bliss. The Times is vastly different in 1998 and so are the people who produce it.
