One of a kind

Article Abstract:

Controller of BBC1 Alan Yentob has a difficult job in trying to attract a wide range of audiences by being popular but also distinctive. Yentob believes the public expect specific types of programme from the BBC that are unavailable on rival channels but they simultaneously want the programmes to be of personal interest. Yentob's approach to drama has been criticised, despite some success with quality drama productions in 1994. Yentob feels the writers who complain do not appreciate the fact that the BBC is required to deliver popular drama.

Saturday night fevers

Article Abstract:

There are currently mixed views about the light entertainment programming which has traditionally dominated Saturday night television broadcasting in the UK. Some observers believe that light entertainment lacks new ideas, while others point out that it still attracts large audiences. Both the BBC and ITV have been unable to develop a new light entertainment formula which is successful in the key 20.00-21.00 slot on Saturday nights, and this highlights the importance of finding the right format, as well as star presenters.

South-westerly currents

Article Abstract:

BBC South, the BBC's regional news operation in the south-west, has seen strong growth recently, especially following investment of 3 million pounds sterling in digital facilities. The BBC also has BBC West and BBC South West in the region. HTV, the ITV broadcaster based in Bristol, supplied only 15 hours of programming to the ITV network in 1995, but is optimistic about future prospects. Westcountry Television, based in Plymouth, is considering flotation to deter any possibility of a hostile takeover.
