PBS puts spotlight onto US classics

Article Abstract:

The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) plans to launch a series of US productions as part of its Mobil Masterpiece Theatre's American Collection from WGBH Boston, which has been showing British classic productions in the past 27 years. The American Collection will run nine specials from the 1999 to 2000 season. PBS, which intends to retain UK-based drama productions in other program slots, wanted to start a new trend but assures that the move is response to the launch of BBC America on the US cable, which is a major rival of PBS. PBS was also given additional funding of over $200 million from Mobil, which sponsors the drama strand, in exchange for more US Classics.
