Pratt appointed president as Wilson exits Wavefront

Article Abstract:

Alias Wavefront will have Warren Pratt as new president after Penny Wilson resigned to pursue other interests, said a company spokesman. Pratt used to be Silicon Graphics (SGI)' vice president of Silicon Interactive before his new appointment. While Wilson has reportedly not made any next step after Alias Wavefront, sources hinted that she could follow the moves of former Alias executives. Rob Burgess and Brain Allum, both former Alias presidents, have ventured to Internet software firm Macromedia. Wilson's departure is also believed to be related to a restructuring program planned by SGI CEO Rick Belluzo.

Bill's play to take PC power onto TV

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp.'s Bill Gates is actively involved in developing a new range of PC-TVs in cooperation with computer giants Compaq and Intel. However, Gates' plans for Microsoft's set-top boxes to become digital TV standards are being met with opposition by the media industry, which opposes the move towards the progressive scanning format and favours the current interface scanning system for displaying pictures. Gates has considerable interests in US cable businesses, with the acquisition of Web TV and investment in fourth-largest cable operator Comcast.

3G mobile: The future or the next hi-tec failure?

Article Abstract:

Jim Cook, general manager of PacketVideo Europe, and Peter Cochrane, co-founder of Conceptlabs and former chief technologist of British Telecom, discuss the future of 3G mobile. Cook supports it, saying that wireless communication is easy to use and delivers in a compelling way. Cochrane does not support 3G mobile, saying that it is too expensive and noting that it would cost 1,000 pounds sterling a year to afford the technology.
