Article Abstract:

The cost of launching the new Channel 5has been estimated at between 10 and 30 million pounds sterling. The Independent TelevisionCommission (ITC) has already made it clear that the service must be marketed adequately,especially in the area of VCR retuning. The Virgin consortium is planning a programming-basedlaunch; while director of communications for Pearson, Roy Addison, claims that the secret tosuccess is to raise customer expectations, but not to promise more than can beachieved.

Taming the technology

Article Abstract:

New mutimedia technology can add educational value to natural history programmes if it is used in the correct way. In order to be effective, multimedia must be more than simply a collection of information, and this may require skills from outside the television industry. Multimedia development and publishing is attracting considerable attention, and part of the 'Survival' natural history series, for example, is already being converted into a multimedia format.

Article Abstract:

Adding a dramatic element to history programmes has been very successful in making them more appealing to the general public. Programmers are increasingly interested in unusual approaches, and history has the advantage of having some elements of universal interest. However, history programme makers are aware of the need to ensure that dramatic re-enactments do not stray from historical fact.
