Article Abstract:

Average television viewing time in the UK in the period Sep-Dec 1996 was 25 hours 40 minutes per person per week, down by 2% from the year-earlier period. Viewing at peak times fell by 10%. Some 29% of Britons owned multi-channel television by the end of the period, and non-terrestrial services continued to take audiences away from terrestrial channels. For terrestrial channels, ITV accounted for 39.6% of viewing, followed by BBC1 at 36.3% and BBC2 at 12.1%. The most popular programme was 'EastEnders,' followed by 'Coronation Street' and 'Heartbeat.'

Article Abstract:

An average of 8.2 million people watched each of the Top 50 films televised in the UK in the year to Aug 1998. This accounted for 39% of all those watching television while the films were being shown. BBC1 showed 30 of the Top 50 films, and also accounted for eight of the Top 10 films and 15 of the Top 20. Television viewers are particularly attracted to new films, with half of the Top 50 films being terrestrial premieres. The BBC had 18 terrestrial premieres in the Top 50, while ITV had seven.

Diminishing returns

Article Abstract:

Between January and May 1995, 340,000 homes subscribed to non-terrestrial channels, compared to just over 40,000 per month in 1994. The medium is soon expected to have 25% market penetration. Viewing figures have risen to 8.5% in May 1995, from 7.1% in December. The sector was boosted by BSkyB's No Turning Back' promotion. An overview of satellite/cable channels available is given, along with viewing figures for the UK's terrestrial channels.
