Article Abstract:

Advanced technology is beginning to have a significant impact on television programme production work. Computers are being used at all stages of the production process, and this has prompted television programme production companies to consider ways of linking computers to allow them to exchange pictures. A number of news broadcasters in the UK are using networked computers to produce news already, and Millfilm, the film-effects unit of The Mill, is set to construct a network to connect its film scanners, special effects and animation systems.

Capital concerns

Article Abstract:

Television post-production facilities in Cardiff, Wales, have been largely protected from the recession by the proximity of Welsh-language channel S4C. Despite this, Cardiff's facility houses have experienced two events that have left many unsure about their future. Firstly, Cardiff-based Pyramid was awarded a 1.5 million pounds sterling contract by the BBC, while rival Derwen announced its plan to merge with Barcud of North Wales. The effect of the two deals could be to create an unstable facilities market in Wales.

Slipped disks

Article Abstract:

The multimedia production industry seems to be undergoing significant changes as it becomes clear that CD-Roms are not selling as well as had been expected. Television companies are realizing that converting programmes into successful CD-Roms is not necessarily easy, and financial markets are becoming less enthusiastic about multimedia. Some television companies are choosing to remain with multimedia production, as they feel that the sector may shortly begin to enjoy a revival.
