Style policy and style politics: a neglected aspect of the language of the news

Article Abstract:

Newspaper style books offer a series of rules which help frame the viewpoints of their reporters, and therefore of the attitudes their readers see. Style rules implicitly frame the ideologies and politics of the newspaper's official speech. The style book of the Times, for example, has rules forbidding the use of 'Americanisms' in place of proper 'English' usage. Analysis of style books can help reveal prejudices and biases which the media help perpetuate unconsciously.

Dramaturgical politics: the culture and ritual of demonstrations in Argentina

Article Abstract:

Political demonstrations in Argentina serve an important cultural function. They evolved as a form of dramatic ritual which enabled social groups to have an impact on politics. Their history predates the rule of Juan Peron and continued through the military rule to the present time of democracy. They are an important indicator of public opinion, and more central to Argentinian democracy than in other democratic countries.
