Tax shoot-out

Article Abstract:

The UK television production sector could be badly affected by government plans for an exemption from a initiative permitting people working at temporary locations to claim tax relief on travel and accommodation expenses. The exemption, designed to stop people claiming tax relief for commuting to their permanent workplace, will also apply to Schedule E production staff working at the same temporary location for most or all or a short-term contract. Production companies could find that their costs rise dramatically, making location filming unviable.

Article Abstract:

Hart Ryan Productions encountered many challenges when making the documentary series 'Lakesiders' for BBC1. The series of eight 30-minute programmes, which will be broadcast from Jul 13, 1998, looks at Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex, England. Researcher Jenny Byrom initially found it hard to persuade some stores to participate, and it was also difficult to find the right cast of characters. Considerable sensitivity was required when filming in certain situations, such as looking at the work of store detectives.
