Article Abstract:

In 1976 the Italian government deregulated the television broadcasting industry, which resulted in a significant increase in the number of local broadcasting companies. By 1982 there were 1,594 stations operating. Since local broadcasting is not considered profitable, the reason for entering the field is usually to supplement the owner's other businesses, or to establish political power.
