The role of the independent media in Africa's change to democracy

Article Abstract:

An independent media has played a crucial role in Africa's return to multiparty democracy in 1990s. There exists a causal relationship between a free press and democracy. Democratic institutions degenerate into dictatorship in the absence of an independent media. Most of the African governments became democratic in the 1960s, following colonial rule, which was toppled by dictatorship. The emergence of an independent media in 1990s brought back democracy.
