Under the influence

Article Abstract:

There are very mixed views in the UK about advertiser supplied programming. The Independent Television Commission (ITC) is currently reviewing its policy on advertiser involvement in programmes, but is likely to adhere to its existing principle of keeping overt advertising out of programmes. However, it is still unclear whether a more flexible approach could be taken in order to improve relations between commercial broadcasters and advertisers.

Killer instincts

Article Abstract:

Natural history programme making has traditionally operated on a different basis from the rest of the television programme making industry, but a new element of commercialism is forcing natural history producers to change tactics. They have seen budgets cut dramatically, especially as co-production finance has started to dry up. The emergence of a new era in natural history programme making could lead to high profile series being dropped.

Sharp view finder

Article Abstract:

Documentary film-maker Paul Berriff has gained a reputation for bold projects, and has received a number of awards. His company, formed in 1982, is not financially strong, but he recognises that this will never be the case unless he focuses on more mainstream projects, which he is unwilling to do. He has a strong background in journalism, which he regards as very valuable experience.
