Yentob poised to resume control

Article Abstract:

The posts of BBC1's director of television and controller look likely to be shared by Alan Yentob and David Docherty, according to BBC sources. Yentob is currently director of programmes at BBC Production, while Docherty is director of strategy and channel development at BBC Broadcast. It is believed that Yentob will probably not return directly to the post of BBC1 controller, from which he was removed when the BBC was restructured in Jun 1996. The role of director of television is regarded as being more appropriate for his background.

The folly of top-slicing

Article Abstract:

UK culture secretary James Purnell has released another cut in license fees which funds public service broadcasters. The system of distributing and managing public funds to services will have to be closely evaluated if top-slicing is introduced. The issue of contestable funding of public services, particularly in broadcasting, is analyzed.
