Crime, urban flight, and the consequences for cities

Article Abstract:

The link between rising crime rates and urban flight shows that there is a one-person decline in a city's population for every crime incident. This phenomenon manifests itself more through the outward migration of residents instead of a reduction in new arrivals. Those who are very sensitive to high crime rates are families with high-levels of education or those with children. These households are more likely to remain within the Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area than those who leave the city for other reasons.

School expenditures and post-schooling earnings: evidence from High School and Beyond

Article Abstract:

The effect of school expenditures on students' adult wages is investigated. Wage data from the High School and Beyond survey are analyzed. Results show a significant, although small, effect of school expenditures on earnings. A 10% increase in school spending was observed to raise students' adult wages by only 0.68%. Discrepancies among literature were found to be caused by measurement error in district-level expenditures and the omission of state effects in the earnings regression.

Arrests, persistent youth joblessness, and black/white employment differentials

Article Abstract:

A study of youth unemployment in relation to arrest records is conducted using a Markov chain model of employment changes. Findings show that previous arrests influence employment prospects and account for the employment inequality between black and white youth.
