From financial information to strategic groups: a self-organizing neural network approach

Article Abstract:

A combination of a neural network model, the Self-Organizing Feature Model, and cluster analysis is proposed to obtain a strategic grouping of Spanish savings banks. The concept of strategic groups is regularly used in explaining the relationships between firms within the same sector so that those firms which have a similar financial strategy can be identified and classified. When applied to the financial information published by Spanish savings banks, the proposed technique leads to the identification of the existence of deep-seated regional differences in this particular sector.

A Bayesian approach to modelling the observed bovine spongiform encephalopathy epidemic

Article Abstract:

The Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC) told the UK government that human exposure to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent was the most feasible explanation of the new variant Creutsfeldt-Jakob Disease (nvCDJ). Nonetheless, no direct evidence was establish that would link exposure to the BSE agent to the new variant disease. Beef exports from the US were banned worlwide following the BSE epidemic.
