Market disruption and the incidence of VERs under the MFA

Article Abstract:

Instances of voluntary export restraints (VERs) within the US Multifibre Arrangement (MFA) were analyzed in a bivariate profit model. VERs, in principle, are imposed when imports are expected to cause havoc in the US textile and apparel markets. In the MFA I of 1974-1977 there were 18 countries penalized each with market shares of 4%. In the MFA II (1978-1981) and MFA III (1982-1985), there were 19 countries restrained each with 1% market share. These statistics suggests a pattern of discrimination against some developing countries whose exports to the US had increased rapidly.

Testing data for consistency with revealed preference

Article Abstract:

Application failures of revealed preference methods have been attributed to poor statistical techniques and goodness-of-fit metrics. A nonparametric extension of the goodness-of-fit measure is developed to examine causal relationships between wasted expenditure and maximization of consumer utility. The metric's size exhibited a positive correlation with preference variation and inconsistent observation.

Revealed preferences for property taxes: an empirical study of perceived tax incidence

Article Abstract:

Voters' choices for certain property tax classification systems were gathered using results from a referendum on the elimination of the homestead exemption. Choices revealed voters' recognition of the variable effects of property taxes and the capacity of local governments to use tax discrimination to win voter support.
