Implementation of JIT in a small manufacturing firm

Article Abstract:

An Australian manufacturer adopted a just-in-time (JIT) program to increase customer satisfaction by improved deliveries. Their JIT implementation plan had five stages: training, fixed location storage, mixed model manufacturing, parts level triggered inventory control and constant improvements. Inventory control was implemented in four phases: training, problem or key components, easier components and revision of inventory levels and reorders. Improvements included a 30% growth in profits and sales.

What does a decision support system (DSS) do for manufacturing?

Article Abstract:

The main use of computers in manufacturing is for decision support systems (DSS) which give planners alternatives and ranges. However, DSS can be used more extensively in the factory, including control on the shop-floor. Areas to consider for DSS include sales orders, forecasting, production schedules, distribution of finished goods, material requirements planning, routing, bills of materials, capacity requirements planning, inventory control and quality control.

JIT and job satisfaction: some empirical results

Article Abstract:

Empirical evidence suggests that increasing involvement with just in time (JIT) management leads to higher job satisfaction among employees. The Wilson Sporting Goods plant was studied for how its use of JIT affected the motivation and job satisfaction of managers and production workers. As involvement gets to a high level, managers' satisfaction may level off or drop slightly while nonmanagement employees' satisfaction continues upwards.
