A 'crushing' victory: fuel-air explosives and Grozny 2000
Article Abstract:
Fuel-air explosives have been very effective in the battlefield as demonstrated by the Russians in capturing Grozny, Russia, from Oct-Dec 1999. Also called thermobaric weapons, these explosives work by detonating first a scattering charge inside a bomb rocket, or grenade warhead. Besides Russia, other countries that have a wide range of fuel-air weapons in their arsenals include the US, China and India. In 1993, Russia exhibited a number of for-sale weapons systems with thermobaric warheads at the Nizhny Novgorod arms show.
