A total ship for the total mission

Article Abstract:

Avondale Industries pres Albert L Bossier Jr cited his firm's contribution to the development of the LPD 17 amphibious assault ship. The design and development of the LPD is a significant departure from the Navy's shipbuilding programs. Its development was directed towards the 'total ship ownership' concept which considered how ships will be supported, maintained and provided with the next-generation weapons technologies and systems for their 40-year service lives.

A ship whose time has come

Article Abstract:

The LPD 17 Class of amphibious assault ship was designed and developed to meet the littoral warfare needs of the Navy and Marine Corps for the 21st century. The ship's most significant design feature is its flexibility and capacity to change. Among the new weapons systems which the LPD 17 will accommodate are the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehible and MV 22 Osprey tilt-motor transport aircraft.
