Dual-use success story

Article Abstract:

The US' Global Positioning System (GPS), which began as a US Air Force aid to navigation, has emerged as an excellent example of dual-use success as it evolved into a universal resource for timing information and precision location. GPS is now used for civil, commercial and scientific functions, a growing market that has prompted Europe to consider fielding its own Galileo system. GPS applications include rail car and truck tracking, surveying and mapping, shipping and air traffic control.

Family business

Article Abstract:

The US Special Operations Command will reduce acquisitions in its two flagship programs for the FY2002-2007 long-range budget plan. These programs are the CV-22 Special Operations Forces (SOF) variant of the Marine Corps' MV-22 tilt-rotor aircraft and the Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS). The MV-22 sustained cost overruns associated with SOF- unique systems such as the terrain avoidance, radar and navigation systems as well as self-protection equipment. On the other hand, development costs for the ASDS rose by 200% from $78 million to $234 million.
