Bulgaria ties modernization to NATO future

Article Abstract:

Rear Admiral Minko Kavaldzhiev, Commander of the Bulgarian Navy, reflects on the implications of BulgariaEs membership in NATO on navy's 125th anniversary. He emphasizes the importance of strengthening NATO's southeastern flank and believes that the Bulgarian navy's priorities should be its reorganization and downsizing while at the same time integrating Western equipment in order to create highly mobile, combat ready units.

Captain Antonio Hernandez-Palacios, commanding officer of 'Respuesta Solidaria', the Spanish contribution to aid tsunami relief work in the area of Sumatra, Indonesia shares experiences of his team and the challenges faced by the operation. The problems in reaching affected victims and helping them, with the kind of efforts undertaken by the team are described.
