Beethoven's hair tells all! Thomas Jefferson was just the beginning; using DNA testing and other high-tech tools, scholars are ransacking the past - looking for the historical equivalents of the blue Gap dress

Article Abstract:

DNA offers historians and scientific researchers an opportunity to examine the personal lives of historical figures and to learn as much as possible about their relationships, behavior and other social factors that influenced their actions, creativity or political activity. Key targets include Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Ludwig von Beethoven, Emily Dickinson, Matthew Arnold, Meriwether Lewis. The moral controversy over this exploration addresses why society needs this information and if DNA results are interpreted to suit researchers' theories about famous peoples' behavior.
