Decisive battle and the ghost of Napolean

Article Abstract:

Military history is replete with examples of military commanders who attempted but failed to emulate the decisive victories achieved by Napoleon Bonaparte in the battle of Austerlitz in 1805 and in the double battles of Jena and Auerstadt in 1806. These include Robert E. Lee, Douglas Haig, Erich Ludendorff. The reality of war has time and again turned on military strategists who ignore the past. History appears to have little impact on the thinking of the US military, and the armed services are developing technological capabilities that seem to promise decisive victory against generic opponents. In the real world, the US will encounter opponents whose size and political complexities will present intractable problems.

Bright Star 99/00: componency, flexibility, and attitude in the CentCom AOR

Article Abstract:

The combined/joint military exercise called Bright Star 99/00 was sponsored by the US Central Command and held at different locations in northern Egypt from Sep 25, 1999-Nov 2, 1999. It brought together more than 70,000 soldiers representing 11 nations and each of the US Armed Forces at training areas offshore Egypt and throughout northern Egypt. It involved, among other things, the deployment of a special purpose Marine air-ground task force into theater, which provided an opportunity to evaluate the integration of Marine Corp command and control systems into a truly joint/coalition environment.

Evaluating the Marine Aviation Campaign Plan

Article Abstract:

The Marine Aviation Campaign Plan (MACP) was adapted in 1997 as a means of arresting the decline of the US Marine Corps' aviation component and ensure the continued effectiveness of the service's Marine air-ground task forces. Dedication to the goal of MACP must be demonstratd by demanding the accurate reporting of the material condition of the unit's aircraft from the squadron commanders. The realization of the importance of sortie- based training in combat readiness will contribute to the success of the MACP program.
